Type II Diabetes and the Pilot: Type II diabetes is the most common form of diabetes found, and effects many pilots annually. Fortunately the FAA has made significant changes with regard to diabetes, both insulin dependent and Type II in nature. Both insulin dependent and Type II diabetic pilots can now be certified via the process of a special issuance.

Medical Certification of Insulin-Treated Diabetic Pilots: The FAA has established a policy that permits the special issuance medical certification of insulin-treated applicants for a third-class medical certification. Consideration will be given only to those individuals who have been clinically stable on their current treatment regime for a period of six months or more. Consideration is not being given for first-of the second class certification.

Landings is proud to present the Medicine Forum ARCHIVE mediated by Stephen W. Roberts, M.D

Stephen W. Roberts, M.D., in addition to being a mult-engine, instrument rated private pilot, is also a Senior Aviation Medical Examiner for the Federal Aviation Administration. Dr. Roberts specializes in Aviation Medicine, and is considered by many to be an expert in his field, with over twelve years experience! He is also a member of the Civil Aviation Medical Association and the AOPA. He is truly an advocate of aviation medicine as well as general aviation. Dr. Roberts has also authored numerous articles in Air Progress magazine, and frequently lectures for the Department of Aviation at Mount San Antonio College.

Dr.Roberts has one of the nation's only aviation medical office located directly on an airport. Pilots can fly in and taxi right up to the office. Or, they can drive in to his office located on Brackett airport in Southern California.

In addition to conducting airman medical examinations, Dr. Roberts specializes in helping pilots with a history of health problems, take the proper steps through the FAA in Oklahoma City, to regain and keep their medical certificates.

"Many pilots are not aware that medical certification is a very real possibility for many medical conditions and diseases that they may have originally thought were disqualifying", says Dr. Roberts.

Dr. Roberts can be reached at 909-392-6611 and you are invited to learn more about Dr. Roberts here.
