  C. Baden Responded

Comment on editiorial about attracting new pilots and the next century.
Flying is expensive and the next century looks to put the cost of flying into orbit. A fleet of GA aircraft 20 years old and older is a concern not just from a position of upkeep but as indicated in the editorial appeal and performance as well. On the positive side let me tell you what has recently attracted my family to GA. I have a 15 year old daughter that is a high achiever and yet is a bit timid about asserting herself and having the confidence to believe that she can do litterally anything. Without getting into the age debate and discussion about pushing kids we were cautious about lessons. Flying has helped her confidence level, taught her to be methodical and calculating in her approach to whatever she embarks on. Flying has helped teach her about responsibility first hand. Flying is a great motivator and has given her something to be proud of and something she can get enthused about. She now sees practical application of her physics, math and science background and has entered a new (but difficult for her) world of mechanics. The environment (other pilots and our local airport) are very positive. She flies out of a private airport in Alexandria In. and the support and influence of the surroundings are top notch. I said all of that to say this, the editorial had a number of good, on target comments and I wanted to confirm those and add our personal comments for any value they might be. My own comment about the future about GA and expense is a bit more depressing. I believe rather than affordable 4-5 place "family" STOL aircraft in every garage we are looking at flying for a few with those of modest means going the ultra light route thus limiting the growth potential to the sport-hobby group. I also do not believe that manufacture's liability has ever been anything but an excuse for a failure to respond to demands of the public. (see the US automotive industry in the 70's)

I can imagine the last bit will light some up but this after all just an opinion. Thanks.
