I used to fly a 175 Cessna which is famous for broken pistons. I was
flying from Lake Havasu City with my wife and we had just gone over the rim
of the Grand Canyon when we blew one, we limped back to LHC ok but had to
pull the engine there.
My point is the only pistons that are used in these
engines are the certified ones that will break. Any hotrod supplier could
supply pistons good for 13,000 rpm at a reasonable price, the problem is the
certification process is cost prohibitive. Why can't we have an agency that
could evaluate products like pistons and alternators? The fact that the P-51
went from idea to flight in 120 days seems unthinkable this day and we have
cadcam!!! I was flying a 250 Comanche when OSHA got so wild, I never did
figure out why we didn't have to have propeller cages.
