I've always thought that there are more aviation magazines around than even news magazines or financial magazines. And I think I've subscribed to every existing aviation magazine that is or was, at one time or another. But being a sucker for direct mail ads, I subscribed to yet another aviation magazine, and its premiere issue arrived today.

This one is totally unique, and is unlike any of the run-of-the-mill aviation magazines. It's called Pilot Getaways, and if you see one of their blow-in subscription cards, sign up for it! The great thing for me is that it seems to be geared to strictly Western destinations, and the magazine is filled with all sorts of great flying destinations and ideas. Here are some of the articles from this month: Romantic Getaway (Carmel), Weekend Getaway (Palm Springs), Fly-In Dining (Harris Ranch, where else?!?), Winter Escape (Death Valley/Furnace reek), Telluride, Mammoth, and North Lake Tahoe. The magazine is normal format, but thin due to a small amount of advertising. I suspect that'll change though. But it's loaded with excellent color photos and has standardized headers in each article such as "Flying There," "History," "What to Do," "Where to Stay," and "Where to Eat." Each article ends with a detailed box showing a photo of the airport, and all the airport information you'd ever need. This magazine's a "keeper"; you'll want to file them for future ideas of where to fly. It's $16.75 a year for four quarterly issues, which is an aviation bargain (if ever there was one!). I enjoy writing, and consider myself as having somewhat of an entrepreneurial spirit. When I got through looking through this new publication, my first impression was "Why didn't *I* think of that?" Such is life...
