The commercial air traveller needs to know, that your first officer either has
a second job and/or is concerned about meeting common living expenses. My
earliest introduction to flying was prefaced by my mentor with the statement,
"Never fly on instruments with a pilot who does not fly instruments for a
living." Most 1st officers on especially commuter airlines have an effective
pay (gross pay less deductions for their company training of about $15,000/Yr.,
and most can qualify for food stamps. Is that the kind of person one wants at the
controls during instrument operation?? Most commercial travellers would say no
for obvious safety reasons. But most are not aware of the financial pressures on
their pilot, who also has spent about $130,000 of his/her own money to become
properly trained (most is borrowed cash). I am seeking a group to get the word
out on the non-equality of safety on Trunk vs. Commuter Airlines. I judge that
some re-regualtion is now needed. Tom Bell My "ax to grind" is a
daughter and her close associates who have just now entered the arena of
"Employeed Air Traffic Pilot" i.e., Airline Pilots.
