The Katana was recently evaluated against a
Czech-built Zlin 142C in South Africa. It was
found that the Katana was extremely cheap to
operate. However, as an instructional aircraft,
its flying qualities were too 'easy' and somewhat
dull. The Zlin, on the other hand was found to be
a better pilot trainer with extremely responsive
controls. The Zlin better demonstrated 'real'
flying characteristics like stalling, turns using
rudder. The Zlin required a higher skill level
to land properly. On the downside, parts
availability, especially for the 210hp inverted
Walter engine was bad. One owner in Durban,
reporting a 9-month wait for engine bearings
following a prop-strike.
