Back before I retired from the USAF, I was
travelling on a commercial flight in my Class A
Blue Uniform bedecked with all my awards and my
Command Pilot wings.
My seat was next to a little
old lady who was obviously a "white-knuckled"
first time flyer.
About 30 minutes after take-off
she finally relaxed a bit and looked over to size
me over. She asked what the unifirm represented.
I explained I was a Major in the Air Force. She
looked at my medals and ribbons and asked what the
silver wings meant. I said I was a Command Pilot.
She then asked if I wasn't terribly nervous (as
she was) about flying.
I said that flying was
safer than driving and that I was sure that when
it was my turn "to go" it wouldn't matter whether
I was in a plane, a car, or even sitting in the
bath tub.
She thought that over for a minute,
and then looked over at me sternly and stated,
"Well, young man, all I have to say is that I hope
than when it is your turn to go that I'm not on
the same airplane with you!"
