LeRoy Custer Responded
I am always amazed to see how people use crashes to further their own ideas of
how things should be. CRM is a good thing and should be used to a limit. Some
times choices need to be made that is why the Captain is in charge. The Captain
of Swiss Air Flt 111 failed to get his aircraft safely to a landing. The aviation
industry failed to provide him with what ever information, aircraft, systems,
personnel, and structure for him to do his job. We need to review and act on
facts or really good guesses. Ideas and long articles that present no facts or
even a good guess do no good for anybody, and in fact may cause loss of life. Mr.
Sampson presented no facts or even good ideas. In fact I would recommend that Mr.
Sampson go review the systems and procedures in place for handling smoke in the
cockpit for Swiss Air Aircraft before issuing any recommendations. Operators
handle their aircraft differently. Comparing Value Jet to United, is like
comparing apples to oranges. On open issues like Swiss Air flt 111 lets leave it
up to the "experts in charge" of the investigation to make recommendations and
give us their best guess first.
